Ajoite and Copper in Quartz
Messina Mine, Musina, Limpopo, South Africa
Small Cabinet
7.3 x 4.2 x 3.2 cm
Ajoite is a rare copper-based mineral that appears as inclusions inside quartz crystals. This ajoite was extracted from the no.5 shaft in 1984. It features both the electric blue ajoite inclusions, as well as thin needles of native copper. What makes this piece unusual from other examples, is its termination on both ends. Most often, as is relevant here, the crystals are polished to give a better view of the ajoite, as the crystals are generally milky. This one features three prominent sprays of ajoite inclusions, creating an incredibly aesthetic small cabinet display piece.
