South African minerals & navigating complicated terrain
Nestled within the diverse landscapes of South Africa, lie some of the most sought-after mineral localities in the world. South Africa has earned its place as a notable source for phenomenal examples of mineral species such as rhodochrosite, ettringite, ajoite, sugilite, and many more.
The picturesque regions of the Western Cape, Mpumalanga, and the Northern Cape are hotspots for mineral sourcing. From the unique formations of Amethyst, and so called Cactus Quartz in Boekenhouthoek, to the vibrant electric green Fluorites of Riemvasmaak, the South African soil cradles an exquisite diversity.
We started our journey from Cape Town heading North to Springbok, and into the vast Kalahari Desert. Most mining operations in South Africa such as the Nchwaning Manganese field in the Kalahari are run by large international mining companies, and are difficult to gain access to. With shifting government restrictions, the extraction of fine minerals from these mines has become an increasing challenge.
The border region adjacent to Nambia in the Orange River canyon, is another area where a variety of specimens can be found. Thankfully many of the operations here are on a smaller artisanal scale, which means gaining access to minerals is much easier. We met with several miners and managed to get a hold of some fantastic pieces! The Orange River canyon is extremely scenic and one of the only bodies of water for hours around the area. We stayed overnight at the Karsten Date Farm which backs into the river, a great place to stay and be sure to try some Medjool dates directly from the farm!
